Tropical Islands was built inside aformer airship hangarbetter known asAerium.The facility was originally the airfield for theLuftwaffe’s Brand-Guben Pilot Trainning School. Later on, it became thebiggest airport in the GDR, and was operated as the official airport for all state visits arriving from the former USSR. The airfield even welcomeastronaut Yuri Gagagrinin 1963.

In 1998, the Federal State of Brandenburg sold the facility to, a company which intended to create a technological development hub at this location. Yet, CargoLifter declared insolvency in 2002 and the facility was purchased byPLC/Colin Auone year later. After such financial difficulties, the new owners decided to create a water park in the historic location, giving birth to Tropical Islands.
The airship hangar -also called the dome- now houses part of Tropical Islands and is one of the biggest free-standing structures in the world, covering an area of6.6 hectares. Apart from the dome, the park also has extensive facilities outdoors.
